2015 Harrisonburg “Iron Dog” Course and Other Details/FAQ

1. Building Scent Search: Narcotic or explosive hide will be located within a building, K9 must locate and alert to the proper location of the hidden odor.
2. Building Search: DUAL PURPOSE ONLY- K9 Team will approach building; TWO Canine announcements must be given at threshold of entry point prior to deploying the K9 into the building. K9 must locate and physically apprehend decoy hiding within the building. Decoy will be in a full bite suit.
3. Locker Scent Search: SINGLE PURPOSE ONLY- Narcotic or explosive hide will be located within a bank of lockers. K9 must locate and alert to the proper location of the hidden odor.
4. Muzzle Event: K9 Team will enter designated starting box; Handler will properly place muzzle on K9 prior to beginning the event. Once the muzzle is on the K9, the handler will negotiate multiple obstacles through the course. Lifting K9 over certain obstacles and carrying the K9 through certain obstacles. Once completed handler will remove the muzzle from the K9.
5. Apprehension: DUAL PURPOSE ONLY- K9 Team will then approach a fenced in field. Handler will give TWO Canine announcements at entry point to field. K9 will be sent on a physical apprehension of a decoy wearing a full bite suit.
6. Firearms Event: K9 Team will approach the firing line and will be given a simunition pistol from event staff. Handler will fire 2 rounds strong hand at target #1 and 2 rounds weak hand at target # two. Handler must put at least one round on each target. Any misses or shooting of innocent targets will result in penalties being assessed. Handler must maintain control of K9 during the firearms event.
7. Vehicle Scent Search: K9 Team will be presented with a set of vehicles dedicated to their discipline of either narcotics or explosives. K9 must locate and alert to the proper location of the hidden odor.
8. Scent Wall: SINGLE PURPOSE ONLY-2 odors will be hidden on either the narcotics scent wall or the explosives scent wall. K9 must locate and alert to the proper location of each hidden odor. Narcotic K9 will have to locate 2 narcotic hides and Explosive K9 will have to locate 2 explosive hides.
9. Agility: Agility course consists of several obstacles that the K9 must negotiate. Obstacles include jumps of various heights, catwalk, tunnel, and vehicle window.
In addition to each of the above events there will be natural environment changes in the course that the K9 Team will have to negotiate while traversing the course. These environmental changes will range from grass covered fields, structures, wooded areas, and a water crossing or swinging wooden bridge.
Participants are encouraged to bring a change of clothing and a change of footwear in the event that participants become dirty or wet.
There will be a field official at each of the above stations. Contestants may not proceed to the next station until the official directs them to continue. All disputes during the course will be resolved by the head “Iron Dog” Judge, if resolution cannot be made with the field official.
A complete walk through of the course with explanations of each event will be conducted prior to the start of the event. This walk through is recommended to all participants regardless of prior participation in “Iron Dog” competitions. The “Iron Dog” Judge will explain each event and the requirements of each event.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
There is a gated entrance at 1010 Greendale Road, in the curve before the house at 1016. Follow the dirt road and signs toward "participant parking", "Spectator parking", or "Volunteeer parking"

Is there a rain date?
The event will be held rain or shine. In the event of thunderstorms the day of, we will wait out the storm prior to starting the events. If there are enough storms ahead of time to flood access to the range, we will give 48 hours notification to postpone the event.
Alternate date will be October 21st.
